Both lemons and limes are used for achar preparations. Limes are smaller than lemon and green in color. Lemons are larger and yellow with thick outer layer.Popular varieties of lemon/lime pickles include hot lime pickles, sweet lime pickles, white lime pickles, North Indian style lime pickles and South Indian style lime pickles.

Common ingredients for lemon/lime achars are, garlic, ginger, turmeric, Salt, fenugreek powder and Asafetida powder. Curry leaves, chili powder and green chili peppers may or may not be used based on the preparation method.
